Project example: Windgates Stud, Celbridge
A good example is the distinctive entrance sign Charisma Design produced for Windgates Stud, a character-filled residential stud farm with equestrian facilities in Celbridge, Co. Kildare.
The custom monogram and individual letters were cut from Corten steel and prepared with concealed fixing studs. Each element was then individually positioned and mounted slightly forward from the curved rendered entrance wall.
Fabricated in Waterford and installed in Celbridge, the completed sign combines the Windgates Stud identity with the architecture and equestrian character of the property.
The rust-coloured Corten finish contrasts clearly with the light-coloured wall while complementing the surrounding gates, buildings and mature landscape. The result is distinctive and premium, but not overly polished or out of place in its rural setting.
It demonstrates one of the main strengths of custom metal lettering: the signage can become part of the property rather than looking like a separate panel attached to it.

Important practical considerations
Corten steel is distinctive, but it is not the correct material for every project. During the early weathering process, rainwater can carry rust-coloured residue from the steel. This may stain pale render, concrete, paving or stone beneath the sign. The wall design, drainage, mounting distance and surrounding finishes must therefore be considered before specifying it. The patina also develops gradually. Newly fabricated Corten may initially look dark grey or uneven before moving through brighter orange tones and eventually settling into a deeper brown finish. Clients expecting an immediately uniform colour may be better served by powder-coated aluminium or a specialist painted rust effect. Corten performs best where it is exposed to alternating wet and dry conditions. Constant dampness, trapped water or coastal exposure requires more careful material and fixing assessment. Fixings must also be specified correctly. Incompatible metals, poor detailing or water trapped behind letters can affect both the appearance and lifespan of the installation. These are practical design considerations—not reasons to avoid Corten.
